What Is The Best Portable Fridge Freezer For You?
Everyone is different, and like many other things in life, the best fridge for one person might not be best for the next. The best portable fridge for you depends on your particular needs.
Working out which fridge to buy is easier when you break it down into these four steps:
SIZE:
The size of the portable fridge you need depends on:
- Are you driving a big 4WD, pickup truck or a SUV?
- How many people would be for the trip?
- How many days or weeks would be for your trip?
Here shows how many cans each size fridge could hold:
Sizes | Cans |
20L | 18 |
35L | 45 |
40L | 60 |
50L | 72 |
55L | 79 |
65L | 105 |
80L | 120 |
95L | 138 |
Fist of all, measure the dimensions of the boot of your car or tray on the back of your truck (you’ll need a 12V socket in your ute tray or boot too). Being portable, you will also need to be moving and lifting the fridge around at some points, so if the larger options are too heavy to lift, you could opt for 2 smaller more manageable fridge/freezers.
Function
There are two types of portable fridges freezer in the market now:
Portable Fridge/freezer – can be used as a fridge or a freezer (but not both at the same time.
Dual fridge and freezer – a big two-in-one with separate fridge and freezer sections. You could set each side for fridge or freezer as your wish. If you are only travelling for short periods of time, packing frozen foods, to slowly defrost in a single zone fridge could be an option for you, without blowing out the budget.
Also an important part that i mentioned in last blog is the compressor. If you drive overland traveling a lot, please choose the portable fridge which uses the Danfoss(Secop) compressor. It’s the No.1 compressor in the market. It would be stable no matter you are driving in the mountain or desert. But if you just travel in the countryside, other brands are fine, too. They would be cheaper than the danfoss compressor.
Power
The portable fridge freezer needs a stable power support. How and where you are travelling and the available power sources will impact your portable fridge choice. With most models now available with multi voltage use, it is still important to check to see if you will require an adaptor. For most portable fridge freezer in the market right now, there are 3 ways to power your fridge.
- Electricity – the 240V power point at your powered campsite (or using your generator).
- Battery – a 12V/24V battery in your 4WD.
- Solar – panels collect the sun’s energy and can charge the portable power station which would keep your freezer running.
So please compare how much power different fridges use (how fast they would drain your battery)
Accessories
- you may require some additional accessories to make use a little easier and convenient.
- A good design cover would be helpful for keeping heat out, thus improving insulation and reducing power draw.
- Fridge slides can be added to your vehicle for improved access to your portable fridge.
- Battery protection – automatically turns off the fridge before your car battery dies.
- Digital display – makes it easy to set and see the thermostat temperature.
- USB port – a handy plug socket that can be used to charge everyone’s phones.
- Wi-Fi connectivity – you can see and control the temperature with your phone.
